General:  One of Carolina's most improved players in 2013...settled into a role as one of UNC's top short-stick defensive midfielders.

2013 (Freshman):  Saw action in 17 games as both an offensive and defensive short-stick midfielder...named to All-ACC Academic Men's Lacrosse Team...had four goals and two assists...scooped up 10 ground balls and had two caused turnovers...tallied goals against Air Force, UMass, Princeton and Brown...assisted on goals versus Fairfield and Lehigh...had a season-high four ground balls versus High Point...excelled in the game versus Johns Hopkins with two ground balls and his only two caused turnovers of the season...earned kudos on ACC Academic Honor Roll.

Prep:  Graduated from the Gilman School in 2012 where he played lacrosse under the tutelage of coach Brooks Matthews, a UNC alumnus...finished his career there with 39 goals, 19 assists and 89 ground balls...as a senior, he had 21 goals, 12 assists and 35 ground balls...his totals as a junior were 10 goals, four assists and 34 ground balls...had eight goals, three assists and 20 ground balls his sophomore year... was the captain of the lacrosse team as a senior...named the Baltimore Messenger Lacrosse Player of the Year as a senior...won the Tyler Campbell Lacrosse Cup as the Gilman MVP, the Scott B. Deutschman Teammate Award and the Peter Parrott Blanchard Award for his cheerful helpfulness.

Personal:  Jake McLemore Matthai is the son of Bruce and Cecily Matthai...was born in June 1993 in Baltimore, Md. ...majors in communication studies...likes to paint using oil paints and draw using graphite...his father Bruce played lacrosse at Carolina as a midfielder from 1975-79.

The best thing about being a Tar Heel lacrosse player is the brotherhood that is Carolina Lacrosse.
