EARLYSVILLE, Va. - The Carolina men's cross country team finished fourth at the NCAA Southeast Regional on Friday adding more fuel to the likelihood of receiving an at-large team bid for the NCAA National Championships on Sunday and Annie LeHardy secured her individual bid for the national meet based on her finish. A total five Tar Heels earned All-Region honors for this individual finishes in the top 25: Ryan Walling, John Raneri, Isaac Presson, LeHardy, and Lizzy Whelan. The women placed seventh as a team.
Carolina's men's All-Region winners each raced personal bests on the day. Walling led the men's team with his eighth-place 29:06.0, Raneri finished 14th in 29:31.7, and Presson placed 24th in 29:48.5.
Also running PRs for the 10K were Joe Sansone who placed 43rd in 30:25.6, Matt Valeriani with his 51st 30:36.5, and Pat Schellberg with his 55th 30:40.3. Scott Morgan also raced for the Tar Heels finishing 111th in 31:34.9.
Eastern Kentucky (58 points) and Virginia (96 points) advanced as teams out of the men's regional as they went one and two for team placing.
LeHardy earned a personal best in the 6K, finishing seventh in 20:19.7. She will compete as an individual at the NCAA National Championship on Saturday, November 23rd, in Terre Haute, Ind.
Also earning All-Region honors for the women was Whelan with her 19th-place 21:07.7.
Rounding out the day for the Carolina women's squad was Ashley Miess (42nd, 21:32.8), Malia Cali (65th, 21:57.4), Caleigh Bachop (90th, 22:21.7), Sami Jorgensen (91st, 22:25.6), and Kylie McCoy (97th, 22:29.8).
Virginia (57 points) and William & Mary (69 points) advanced as teams out of the women's regional as the first- and second-place team finishers.
