North Carolina 72, Virginia Tech 60 (overtime)

  • The Tar Heels are now 15-6 overall, 5-3 in the ACC and 9-1 at the Smith Center.
  • The 12-point margin of victory is UNC's largest in an overtime game since UNC defeated Duke, 96-83 (+13) on March 3, 1984.
  • Freshman point guard Marcus Paige scored a season-high 19 points, handed out five assists (none in the first half) and tied his season-high with five rebounds.
  • Paige a season-high four three-pointers in 10 attempts, the fourth of which came with 3:00 to play in overtime and gave Carolina a 62-58 lead, its first two possession lead of the entire game.
  • Paige scored eight of Carolina's 17 points in overtime as he out-scored the Hokies, 8-5, in the extra period. Paige had not scored more than eight points in any of the previous five games.
  • Sophomore forward James Michael McAdoo led all scorers on both teams with 22 points and grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds. It was his third consecutive double-double, fourth in the last five games and eighth of the season.
  • McAdoo scored 20 or more points for the first time since he had a career-high 26 in the season opener against Gardner-Webb.
  • The overtime was Carolina's first since a 73-65 win over Ohio in the 2012 NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 in St. Louis.
  • It was Carolina's fewest points allowed in an overtime game since Dec. 28, 1981 (a 56-50 win over Penn State).
  • The Tar Heels are now 54-39 in overtime games, including 7-7 under head coach Roy Williams. UNC has won seven of its last nine overtime games.
  • This was UNC's first overtime game at home since Feb. 10, 2008, a double overtime, 103-93, win over Clemson.
  • Carolina held Erick Green, the nation's leading scorer to 16 points, 9.5 points below his season average coming into the game. Green scored six points early in the second half, then the Tar Heels held him without a field goal for 19:45 (from the 16:15 mark of the second half to the 1:30 mark of overtime).
  • Reggie Bullock had five assists, the fifth time this season he has had five or more assists in a game. He was 1 for 8 from three-point range, the first time in nine games he did not make at least two three-pointers in a game.
  • It was the 690thcareer win for head coach Roy Williams. His teams are 690-175 overall, 272-74 at Carolina, 110-42 In ACC regular-season play and 341-34 at home (139-17 at the Smith Center).
