No. 1 Tar Heels Win 3-1 At ODU
Release: 10/26/2012
NORFOLK, Va. - The top-ranked North Carolina field hockey team improved to 17-1 on the season with a 3-1 win at No. 9 Old Dominion Friday evening. The Tar Heels got goals from senior Caitlin Van Sickle and sophomores Charlotte Craddock and Loren Shealy in the win, their second of the season over ODU (13-5). UNC won the teams' first meeting of the season 3-2 in Chapel Hill on Sept. 14.

Friday at L.R. Hill Sports Complex, Craddock got UNC on the board in the 32nd minute, intercepting an ODU ball and sending it in to put her team up 1-0.  The goal was her team-high 16th of the season in just her 12th game played.

Ten minutes into the second half, the Lady Monarchs' Rosario Villagra deflected in a ball from Sarah Breen to tie the game at 1-1.

Less than two minutes later, the Tar Heels moved ahead again. Craddock cut into the circle from the left and sent a pass to Shealy, who scored her 12th goal of the year and her third gamewinner to put UNC up for good.

In the 54th minute, UNC added one more, by Van Sickle who took a pass from senior Katie Ardrey.

The game was the final regular-season home match for ODU coach Beth Anders, who is retiring at the end of this season, her 29th as the Lady Monarchs' head coach. Anders has won more NCAA championships (nine) and games (559) than any other coach.

The Tar Heels return to Chapel Hill for their final game of the regular season on Sunday against Radford. Game time has been moved up to 11:30 a.m., 90 minutes earlier than originally scheduled. Carolina will honor eight seniors prior to the start of the game.
