UNC Takes Rain-Shortened Game, 6-1

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- No. 1 North Carolina claimed a midweek sweep of visiting James Madison (20-25) on Wednesday with a 6-1 win in a rain-shortened contest that was called in the sixth inning.

The Tar Heels improve to 44-4 on the year with the win as senior Chris Munnelly moves his record to 5-0. Munnelly threw five innings of one-run ball as he allowed two hits and struck out six.

Michael Russell paced the Tar Heels at the plate with a 3-for-3 performance with a run scored and two RBIs. 

Parks Jordan busted up a 1-1 tie in the bottom of the fourth inning when he lined a two-run double to right center field. Cody Stubbs and Michael Russell came around to score after they reached to open the inning thanks to a walk and a single.

A pair of wild pitches by James Madison starter Michael Church would allow Jordan to score from second and push UNC's lead to 4-1 after four innings.

The Tar Heels tacked on two more runs in the fifth inning as the trio of Colin Moran, Brian Holberton and Michael Russell all walked with one out to load the bases for Michae Russell.

The sophomore shortstop would hit a chopper through the middle of the infield scoring Moran and Holberton and extending the Tar Heel advantage to 6-1.

Freshman Reilly Hovis came on in relief of Munnelly to open the sixth inning and threw a scoreless frame to keep the Tar Heels in front.

Two quick outs preceded a Landon Lassiter single beore the game entered a weather delay with Colin Moran at the dish. The game would be called after a delay of 50 minutes.

Carolina will now head to Atlanta to take on Georgia Tech in an ACC weekend series. Action will get underway at 7 p.m. on Friday from Russ Chandler Stadium and all three games will be carried live on ESPN3 and SiriusXM Radio.
