No. 1 Tar Heels Dispatch Davidson, 10-2
Release: 03/05/2013

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- No. 1 North Carolina won its 11th straight game to open the season on Tuesday with a 10-2 win over Davidson (5-6) at Boshamer Stadium.

The 11-0 start is the best by a Tar Heel club since the 2000 squad won its first 21 games of the season.

Senior Cody Stubbs led the Tar Heels at the plate with 3 RBIs, including a two-run home run in a five-run third inning.

Sophomore second baseman Mike Zolk matched a career high with three hits in the victory, while Stubbs and Skye Bolt chipped in two hits apiece.

Bolt scored a team-high three runs on the afternoon with leadoff man Chaz Frank scoring two runs of his own.

Freshman right-hander Trent Thornton improved to 2-0 on the year as he struck out five over 5.2 innings of work. The Wildcats pushed two runs across against Thornton, both of which were unearned.

Following a leadoff walk to open the second inning Thornton would go on to retire the next 11 batters he faced before departing in the sixth.

After the five-run third inning, Carolina added a pair of runs in both the fifth and seventh innings before Colin Moran recorded his second RBI of the contest on a fielder's choice in the eighth.

Sophomores Trevor Kelley and Mason McCullough threw 3.1 innings of hitless relief for the Tar Heels as Kelley went a career-long 2.1 innings and struck out three.

McCullough recorded a pair of strikeouts in the ninth to close out Carolina's 11th straight win.

Up next for UNC is a trip to Winston-Salem, N.C. to take on Wake Forest in the ACC opener for both teams. Action gets underway Friday at 6 p.m. with games two and three taking place Saturday at 4 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m.
