Due to the level of development being undertaken throughout the UNC campus at the present time, roadwork in support of various projects can cause delays and congestion particularly evident during large-scale events, including Men's Home Basketball Games at the Dean E. Smith Student Activities Center.

Please understand that campus agencies are doing their best to see that the impact of sustainable growth on campus operations and activities is minimized. Additionally, the UNC Department of Public Safety is also advising motorists of travel tips and route alternatives which should provide the most convenient accessibility and enjoyment of campus special events. Measures taken include message boards on area roadways, elongated turn lanes, extra traffic control personnel, and suggestions regarding less-traveled routes to campus. As such, the following recommendations are provided:

  • Heed the information on lighted message boards located on many of the inbound roadways to campus;

  • Tune into TIS Travelers' Information Station 1610 AM for recorded information when in the immediate campus area;

  • Read signage on campus and follow the directions of traffic personnel and parking lot monitors;

  • If possible, motorists should consider utilizing routes other than those via Route 15-501 (Fordham Boulevard) to southern Manning Drive unless they have the appropriate permits;

  • The general public may wish to use South Columbia Street (from the south) or Pittsboro Street (from the north) to access the western end of Manning Drive and the nearby Cardinal and Jackson Decks;

  • Motorists traveling to Chapel Hill from Raleigh should consider using Highway 64 to northbound Route 15-501 rather than I-40 to Highway 54;

  • Motorists inbound along I40 to NC54 may wish to remain inbound on Raleigh Road, taking a left onto Ridge Road or Stadium Drive to access the Rams Head Deck or continuing to southbound Pittsboro Street to access the Cardinal and Jackson Decks.
