Pairings Set For 40th Annual ACC Women’s Basketball Tournament

Notre Dame holds No. 1 seed for fourth consecutive year as tourney heads to Conway, S.C.

CONWAY, S.C. (theACC.com) – North Carolina and Pitt face off in the final game of the first round on Wednesday of the 40th annual Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Basketball Tournament from the HTC Center. Tip off is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.

Three-time defending champion Notre Dame will be the No. 1 seed for the fourth consecutive year. The tournament will feature all 15 ACC teams and 14 games, beginning with three first-round matchups on Wednesday. Four second-round games are scheduled for Thursday, followed by the quarterfinals on Friday, the semifinals on Saturday and the championship game on Sunday at 1 p.m. The HTC Center, located on the campus of Coastal Carolina University, will be playing host to the tournament for the first time.

Play begins at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, with No. 12 seed Virginia Tech (17-12, 4-12) facing No. 13 Clemson (14-15, 3-13). Wednesday’s second game will find No. 10 Georgia Tech (16-13, 5-11) facing No. 15 Boston College (9-20, 2-14) at 3:30 p.m. First-round action concludes Wednesday at 6:30 pm., with No. 11 Pitt (13-16, 4-12) facing No. 14 North Carolina (14-15, 3-13).

Top-seeded Notre Dame (27-3 overall, 15-1 ACC), second-seeded Florida State (25-5, 13-3), third-seeded Duke (25-4, 13-3) and fourth-seeded NC State (22-7, 12-4) will receive byes into Friday’s quarterfinal round.

The second round opens Thursday at 11 a.m., when No. 5 seed Louisville (25-6, 12-4) faces the winner of Wednesday’s first game.  No. 8 Virginia (18-11, 7-9) will face No. 9 Wake Forest (15-14, 6-10) at 2 p.m.  The third game of Thursday’s session finds No. 7 Miami (21-7, 10-6) taking on the winner of Wednesday’s second game at 6 p.m. The second round concludes on Thursday at 8 p.m., with No. 6 Syracuse (20-9, 11-5) meeting the winner of Wednesday evening’s final contest.

No. 4 NC State begins action on Friday at 11 a.m., when it faces the winner of Thursday’s first game. Notre Dame opens tournament play at 2 p.m., when it faces Thursday’s second-game winner. The evening session begins at 6 p.m., with No. 2 Florida State facing the winner of Thursday’s third game. No. 3 Duke closes out Friday’s quarterfinal session, facing the winner of the Thursday session’s finale.

The winner of Friday’s first two games will meet in Saturday’s noon semifinal game, while the winners of the Friday evening session will meet Saturday at 2:30 p.m.

The championship game of the 2017 ACC Women’s Basketball Tournament will be played Sunday at 1 p.m.

All 14 games of this year’s tournament will be televised. The first, second and quarterfinal rounds will be carried by the league’s regional sports network, RSN and ACC Network Extra. Both Saturday semifinal games will be carried nationally with the noon game on ESPN2 and the second game carried by ESPNU. A national audience will also watch Sunday’s championship game via ESPN2.

This year’s tournament features seven teams ranked among the nation’s top 25 in the latest Associated Press poll with Notre Dame at No. 5, followed by No. 8 Florida State, No. 13 Duke, No. 14 Louisville, No. 17 Miami, No. 18 NC State and No. 20 Syracuse.

While the Grand Strand is new territory for ACC women’s postseason basketball, conference teams have participated in regular-season games and tournaments in the area for decades. This year’s ACC Women’s Tournament will mark the event’s seventh appearance in the state of South Carolina and its first since a five-year run in Rock Hill from 1992-96.
