COLLEGE PARK, Md. - North Carolina closed out the 2013 regular season with a dominant 8-1 victory at Maryland Sunday. Jenna Kelly and Amber Parrish each tallied two runs on two hits, with a home run apiece to help Carolina take game three of the series.
The Tar Heels dropped the doubleheader games on Saturday but finish out the season 38-18 overall and 13-8 in ACC play with Sunday's win.
Jenna Kelly added another homer in the second, smashing the ball past the left field post for her fourth long ball of the year. Amy Nece then singled up the middle followed by two fielder's choices to Erin Satterfield and Kristen Brown. With bases loaded, Haleigh Dickey hit a hard standup double to left to score Nece and Satterfield, putting Carolina up 5-0 after two frames.
Nece drew a walk in the third, scoring as Satterfield reached base on a Terrapin fielding error.
With Carolina leading 6-0 into the sixth, the Terrapins broke up the shut out as Lindsey Schmeiser doubled to right and scored on a double to left center by Lindsey Carroll.
The Tar Heels added their final two runs in their last at-bat. Parrish singled to short, and Stephanie Krider scored while pinch running for Parrish when Kelly doubled and advanced to third on the throw. Lauren Walker drew a walk, and a single by Satterfield over Maryland's third baseman knocked in Nece for the final 8-1 mark.
Lori Spingola pitched the complete game, giving up six hits and one walk while notching six strikeouts.
The Tar Heels have a weekend off from competition before heading to the ACC tournament, which will be held May 9-11, in Tallahassee, Fla.
