Carolina Splits With Ball State, EMU

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - No. 24 UNC split games with Ball State and Eastern Michigan Saturday as the Louisville Classic continued.

The Tar Heels dropped their fourth straight with a 3-1 loss to the Cardinals in their first game before bouncing back in game two with a run-ruled 10-2 win over the Eagles.

Haleigh Dickey's three-run homer and sacrifice fly for the final run highlighted game two. Kristen Brown finished the day with six hits and two runs, while Aquilla Mateen scored three for the Tar Heels.


Ball State's Taylor Cox led off with a bunt single and advanced to second on a walk to Taylor Rager. Amanda Carpenter singled and advanced to second on the throw, scoring Cox to put the Cardinals up early.

The next inning, Sadie Robertson drew a walk and then advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Loren Cihlar before moving to third on a wild pitch. Cox doubled to bring home Robertson to make it 2-0, Ball State.

In the fifth, Cihlar singled and moved to second on a walk to Hanne Stuedemann before scoring on a double to right center by Jennifer Gilbert.

Amber Parrish singled to lead off the sixth. Pinch runner Aquilla Mateen moved to second on a wild pitch before advancing to third and then scoring on two groundouts, putting the Tar Heels on the board.

Kristen Brown had six of Carolina's six hits, but the Tar Heels left eight on base. Lori Spingola took the loss, giving up five hits and four walks while striking out seven.


With two outs in the top of the second, Eastern Michigan's Cassidy Jenkins and Aoife Duffy each drew a walk before a single by Mady Hostetler scored Jenkins.

The Tar Heels responded with six runs of their in the second, taking their first lead in five games. Amy Nece reached base on an EMU error, stole second and then advanced to third when Aquilla Mateen beat out the throw for a single. Mateen then stole second and advanced to third on a second EMU error while Nece stole home for Carolina's first run. Kristen Brown reached on an error and advanced to second, which drove in Mateen. Erin Satterfield also reached on an error, which moved Brown to third before Haleigh Dickey smashed a three-run homer to right center.

As the frame continued, Constance Orr was the fourth Tar Heel to reach on an error. After the Eagles made a pitching change, Amber Parrish singled through the left side to advance Orr to second.  Batting for the second time that inning, Chandless doubled to right center to drive in Orr for the sixth run.

In the fifth, the Eagles' Hostetler singled through the right side and advanced to second on a bunt single by Katy Blaharski. A sacrifice bunt by Nicholson advanced Hostetler and Blaharski before a single to center by Amanda Herror drove in Hostetler.

Chandless led off the bottom of the fifth with a walk, and Tisha Mahon then stole second pinch running for Chandless. Mahon advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Nece before coming home on a wild pitch to make it 7-2. Jenna Kelly drew a walk, stole second and advanced to third on a single by Mateen. Brown also singled, which moved Mateen to second and loaded the bases for Kati Causey. Causey hit a hard single to left, which scored two runs and left the game-ending run on third. Dickey hit a sacrifice fly to right as Brown tagged up and came home for the final run of the 10-2 victory.

Ashley Bone earned the win for the Tar Heels, striking out six in five innings. She gave up seven hits and two walks as she improved to 5-1.


Carolina closes out play at the Louisville Classic with a game against Iowa on Sunday at 12:30 p.m. The Tar Heels return home for a game against NC Central on Tuesday at 6 p.m. before heading to Florida State next weekend for their second ACC series of the season.
