Tar Heels Win At High Point, 15-6

HIGH POINT, N.C. - Freshman Devin Markison scored a season-high four goals and junior Brittney Coppa scored four times as North Carolina powered past High Point, 15-6, in women's lacrosse action on Tuesday night. 

With the win, the third-ranked Tar Heels won their sixth game in a row and improved to 6-1 this season.  High Point fell to 2-5.

Carolina dominated from the beginning, scoring three times in the first five minutes and building a 9-0 lead in the first 25:13 of the game.  Coppa scored three of UNC's first six goals and freshman Sammy Jo Tracy had two.

After High Point its first goal of the contest with 2:57 left in the half, Markison scored her second goal of the game with 30 seconds to go to give the Tar Heels a 10-1 halftime lead. 

Markison exploded to score three goals in a span of just 4:04 late in the contest to put the game away for good after High Point had scored three consecutive times to cut the UNC lead to 11-5.

Tracy finished with two goals, as did junior Taylor George.  Senior Emily Garrity had a goal and an assist, and junior Abbey Friend dished out two assists.  Kara Cannizzaro and Aly Messinger each scored one goal, while Kate Martino, Sam McGee and Paige Hanson had one assist apiece.

Christie Dougherty scored twice for High Point, and Mackenzie Carroll had a goal and an assist.

Senior Lauren Maksym started in goal for Carolina and played the first half, recording two saves while allowing one goal.  Freshman Megan Ward played the second half in the cage made three saves with five goals allowed.

The Tar Heels will return to action on Saturday at 1 p.m. against Georgetown at Fetzer Field.
