COLLEGE STATION, Texas - No. 23 Carolina closed out play at the Aggie Classic Sunday with a 4-2 win over Pittsburgh.
The Tar Heels improved to 7-5 behind a strong outing from Lori Spingola, who tied her career high with 14 strikeouts in six innings.
In the third, Tisha Mahon singled, stole second and then advanced to third on a groundout before scoring on a single by Erin Satterfield. Haleigh Dickey then doubled to right center to drive in Satterfield for the 4-0 lead.
Pittsburgh's Carly Thea doubled in the sixth and scored on a double to left center by Tori Nirschl. Nirschl advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Jordan Fannin and then came home on a single by Maggie Sevilla to make it 4-2.
The Tar Heels will host the annual Carolina Classic next weekend, Feb. 22-24. UNC will welcome George Washington, Iona, Iowa State, North Dakota State and Penn State for a weekend of 12 games at Anderson Stadium. Visit the Carolina Classic Central page for game times and links for live stats.
