Release: 02/12/2013

No. 24 North Carolina claimed its ninth-straight dual win over Duke Tuesday night, 24-13, in Durham, N.C. The win improves UNC to 6-6 on the year and 2-3 in the ACC.

The Tar Heels jumped out to a 3-0 team lead as sophomore Tanner Eitel (174) claimed a narrow decision over Trey Adamson, 3-2. Eitel and Adamson were scoreless after the first before Eitel quickly escaped and took down Adamson before holding off Adamson in the final period.

Sophomore Alex Utley (184) extended UNC's lead to 7-0 as he routed Duke's Dylan Ryan. Utley only picked up a takedown in the first but used four takedowns over the final two periods to post a 14-2 major decision.

The 197 match saw Frank Abbondanza and Diego Bencomo combine for 33 points as Bencomo came out victorious with the 21-12 major decision. Bencomo held a 7-4 advantage after the first period before extending it to 14-6 after two. Bencomo opened the third with a pair of takedowns before Abbondanza countered with two of his own to close the deficit to 19-12 but a Duke escape and a riding time point provided the major decision.

Duke's Brian Self downed UNC's Jake Barnhart at heavyweight by a 2-1 margin as each registered an escape and Self used a riding time advantage to claim the win. The win pushed the dual into a tie at 7-7 after three bouts.

No. 7 Nathan Kraisser quickly pushed the momenutm back into Carolina's favor as he pinned Peter Terrezza in 3:51. Kraisser held a 3-2 advantage after the first period and notched a quick reversal in the second before pinning Terrezza for six team points.

No. 19 Joey Ward (133) pushed UNC's lead to 16-7 with an 8-2 decision over Brandon Gambucci. Ward and Gambucci were scoreless after the first before Ward used a reversal early in the second before adding a pair of back points en route to the 8-2 win.

No. 6 Evan Henderson (141) claimed a third straight UNC win as he posted a 4-2 decision over Tanner Hough. Henderson held a 3-2 advantage going to the third before riding Hough for the entire period to claim the 4-2 win and boost UNC's lead to 19-7.

Duke pulled back three points at 149 pounds when Marcus Cain downed Christian Barber by a 9-7 margin. The decision cut UNC's lead to 19-10 before an overtime affair at 157 pounds.

Chris Mears (157) battled Immanuel Kerr-Brown throughout his match as the pair ended tied at 4-4 forcing a sudden victory period. Kerr-Brown was able to secure a takedown in the extra period to claim the 5-4 decision.

Redshirst freshman John Staudenmayer dominated at 165 pounds with an impressive 19-4 tech fall in 4:47 over Randy Roden to seal the match for Carolina. Staudenmayer held a 14-2 lead after the first period before tacking on five more for the win.

Carolina now hosts the Carolina Duals on Sunday, Feb. 17 as the Tar Heels face Campbell and The Citadel at Carmichael Arena.
