BATON ROUGE, La. - No. 22 North Carolina dropped games to No. 10 LSU and Tulsa Friday as the Tar Heels opened 2013 play at the Tiger Classic.
UNC (0-1) will continue tournament action Saturday against Purdue at 10:30 a.m. and Hampton at 3:30 p.m.
Tulsa's Aimee Creger tallied seven strikeouts in seven innings and Haley Henshaw registered two RBIs to lead the Golden Hurricane 3-1 over Carolina in the Tar Heels' first game of the day.
Jill Barrett put the first run on the board for Tulsa with an RBI double down the left field line in the bottom of the sixth. Henshaw clinched the win when she knocked in a pair of runs off a hard single to right field.
Sophomore Lauren Walker responded for the Tar Heels in the top of the seventh with a double down the left field line. Elisha Elliott came in to pinch run for Walker and gave the Tar Heels a run after freshman Kristen Brown singled up the middle.
Junior Lori Spingola notched two strikeouts and gave up five hits in six innings in the circle for Carolina.
The host team set the pace early in the game, plating five runs in the opening frame behind a two-run homer by Tammy Wray.
The Tar Heel defense shut down LSU the following inning before the Tigers scored three more in the third off another RBI from Ray and two from A.J. Andrews.
North Carolina was in scoring position at several points throughout the game, leaving runners on base in three innings. Walker and senior Haleigh Dickey each drew a walk and grabbed a hit for UNC.
Rachele Fico tallied five strikeouts in five innings for the Tigers, giving up three walks and five hits to the Tar Heels in LSU's 8-0 win.
