CLARION, Pa. -- North Carolina won back-to-back duals Saturday each by a two point margin. First, the Tar Heels defeated Michigan State 23 to 21, their first dual win against a Big Ten team since facing Purdue in 2007, and then posted a 21 to 19 victory over Clarion.
The Tar Heels opened up against the Spartans with a 16-0 lead following the pins by Ward and Henderson in addition to a major decision by No.12 Nathan Kraisser (125) in the first match of the day.
Kraisser's 15-5 major decision over Brenan Lyon began the day for the Tar Heels with a 4-0 lead.
Ward's pin over Brandon Fifield and Henderson's pin over Nick Trimble extended the deficit to 16 in favor of UNC.
Michigan State picked up decisions at 149 and 157 pounds to come within ten points of the Tar Heel lead, 16-6.
John Staudenmayer (165) posted a major decision, 13-0, over Nick Proctor to push UNC to a 20-6 lead.
Tanner Eitel (174) defeated Jordan Wohlfert by way of a decision to further extend the Tar Heel lead to 23-6.
Michigan State took the upper weight classes with three straight victories to close out the dual.
At 184 pounds, John Rizqallah defeated No. 19 Alex Utley in a decision win.
The Tar Heels retained the lead and the victory despite these losses to finish with a 23-21 win.
Carolina once again jumped out to a quick lead with victories in the first three weight classes.
Kraisser posted a 10-7 decision over Tyler Fraley in the first match of the dual at 125 pounds.
In the 133 pounds weight class, Ward won with an 8-2 decision over Clarion's Joe Waltko.
Henderson won a 6-0 decision over Devin Cook to give the Tar Heels a 9-0 lead for the dual.
Carolina's Christian Barber (149) lost a close 3-2 match to Tyler Bedelyon, putting Clarion on the board with three points.
At 157 pounds, Crawford fell to No. 4 James Fleming. This victory by pin knotted things up at 9 between Carolina and the Golden Eagles.
Staudenmayer registered a major decision, 9-1, over Nick Milano at 165 pounds to regain the lead for the Tar Heels.
Eitel and Utley continued the trend, each posting major decisions of their own. At 174 pounds, Eitel won with an 8-0 major decision over Ryan Darch, pushing the Tar Heels to a 17-9 lead.
Utley's 10-2 major decision over Steven Cressley extended the lead to 21-9 in favor of Carolina.
The Golden Eagles claimed the final two matches. Abbondanza lost by major decision at 197 pounds to Justin Ortega.
In the final match of the day for the Tar Heels, Clarion's Phil Catrucco defeated Klempay by pin, earning six points for Clarion.
The Tar Heels retained the lead, posting a 21-19 final score in the dual.
Up next for the Tar Heels is trip to Philadelphia, Pa., to face Drexel Sunday.
