Release: 12/05/2012

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Senior center Waltiea Rolle powered her way to a career-high 24 points as the No. 21 North Carolina women's basketball team defeated Radford 64-44 Wednesday in Carmichael Arena.

Rolle also chipped in five blocks and seven rebounds in her effort, while freshman forward Xylina McDaniel put up 16 points, shooting 10-for-12 from the free-throw line, and eight boards.

Senior forward Krista Gross led the Tar Heels' defensive effort, posting a career-high 17 rebounds alongside her nine points. Twelve of those rebounds came on the defensive end against a scrappy Highlander squad.

Rolle also led all scorers at the half with 13 points, four rebounds and two blocks, while Gross chipped in 11 boards and six points.

UNC outrebounded the Highlanders 31-11 before the break, as the Tar Heels worked their way to a 33-10 lead. That impressive rebounding margin continued by game's end, as North Carolina controlled the glass 52-27.

Radford struck first in Wednesday's game, before North Carolina took a lead it would not give up. The Tar Heels opened their effort with a 3-pointer from Megan Buckland before embarking on a 13-2 run.

North Carolina continued pushing the pace in the first half and shot 43.3 percent for a quickly growing lead. That lead stayed steady in the second half, as Rolle continued to power the Tar Heels' offense underneath the basket. In total, UNC shot 32 points in the paint.

Radford did close the game to within 13 points with 6:14 left in the game thanks to an aggressive approach to its defense. Although the Tar Heels committed 31 turnovers, a Gross three-pointer and responsive North Carolina offense finished strong on a 27-11 run in the middle of the second half.

Freshman guard Diani Mason led the Highlanders with 10 points, as the only Radford player to score in double digits.

The Tar Heels next face North Carolina Central on Wednesday, Dec. 12, at 11 a.m.
