Initially the home to Carolina's men's basketball and wrestling teams, Carmichael Arena is currently the home for volleyball, gymnastics, wrestling and women's basketball teams. Though the men's basketball team moved to the Dean E. Smith Center midway through the 1985-1986 season, the other four sports have continued to call Carmichael home. Prior to moving to the Smith Center, the Tar Heel men's basketball team compiled an amazing 169-20 record at Carmichael Arena, including a perfect 5-0 during the first half of the 1985-86 season.
Prior to the 1976-77 season, 1,200 seats were added to bring historic Carmichael to a capacity of 10,180. On January 22, 1999, the first-ever sold-out crowd filled Carmichael to capacity to watch the Carolina women's basketball team play Duke. UNC also drew a capacity crowd for the Jan. 20, 2003, game against Duke.
Carolina volleyball also hosted a near-capacity crowd of 9,850 in 2001 as they hosted Kansas prior to the men's basketball Midnight Madness event.
Carmichael Arena adjoins Woollen Gymnasium, a long-time site of varsity competition and current home of physical education and intramural activities.
The Arena is named for the late William D. Carmichael, Jr., a highly popular figure on campus who served as the university's comptroller, then as its vice-president. He also served for many years as the Consolidated University's acting president. Carmichael passed away in 1961.
Carmichael Arena was the site of the 1987 U.S. Olympic Festival volleyball competition. On March 3, 2001, the first-ever MatJam, the wrestling championships for the Atlantic Coast, Colonial, and Southern conferences, was held at Carmichael. It has also been the host of NCAA Tournament games for both women's basketball and volleyball, as well as numerous North Carolina state high school championships in volleyball, girls' basketball, and wresting. Athletic camps, cheerleading camps, intramural games, and amateur competition of various kinds make Carmichael a busy place.
The Arena had a new floor installed after a fire in the spring of 1998. The new floor proved to be a good omen for Carolina athletics. The volleyball team went undefeated in 17 games including victories over non-conference opponents Notre Dame and Tennessee. Gymnastics also had a perfect home record, going 6-0 in Carmichael for the first time in school history. The women's basketball team went 16-2 in games at Carmichael during the 1998-99 season. Wrestling won three of its home meets during the 1998-99 season, including an overwhelming 40-0 victory Maryland.
In 2010, Carmichael underwent a complete renovation which included a new infrastructure which included air-conditioning, an additional wing of new offices suites for Olympic Sport Coaches in Field Hockey, Fencing, Gymnastics, Women's Lacrosse, Rowing, Volleyball, Wrestling, and a new suite for Women's Basketball, and also includes administrative offices for game operations and Olympic Sports Administrator Dr. Beth Miller.
The two year, $30 million project includes a new jumbo video scoreboard, ribbon board, new acoustics, lighting and sound system. The spacious new entry and reception area includes a state of the art Women's basketball Museum, as well as new trophy cases and memorabilia recognizing the history of the Gymnastics, Volleyball and Wrestling teams with video screens throughout the arena. The hallways are wood-lined and decorated in graphics with Carolina's most outstanding athletes with well over 100+ All Americans in UNC's 28 sports.
Additional renovations were completed in 2015, as the volleyball team moved into the Ken and Cheryl Williams Volleyball Team room. More than twice the size of the previous locker room, the new private area features a locker room, team room, kitchen and coaches' area, and is equipped with fully-interactive touch-screen television displays.
The state of the art facility now has a capacity of 6,822. The name of the building was officially changed to Carmichael Arena in the dedication on Feb. 28, 2010. It is centrally located in the middle of campus at 310 South Road, Chapel Hill, NC 27514.
