NCAA Seeds: UNC is the No. 2 seed.
Series: UNC leads, 2-0

♦ Atlantic Coast Conference champion North Carolina (17-2), the defending NCAA champion, will play for its seventh NCAA final four berth in the last nine years when it hosts unseeded Navy (17-4) at 1 p.m. on Saturday at Fetzer Field in the NCAA Tournament quarterfinals.

♦ The game will be streamed live by ESPN3.

♦ A win against Navy would send the Tar Heels to the NCAA semifinals for the seventh time in the last nine years and the 10th time overall. 

♦ The winner of Saturday's game will advance to an NCAA semifinal next Friday against the winner of the quarterfinal game between Boston College and Southern California. The NCAA semifinals and final will be played on May 26 and 28 at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, Mass., home of the NFL's New England Patriots.

♦ Carolina is the two-time defending Atlantic Coast Conference champion and has won three consecutive ACC regular season titles. 

♦ Carolina is ranked No. 3 in the nation in the IWLCA coaches poll and No. 2 in the Cascade media poll this week. Navy is unranked but received votes in the media poll.

♦ Carolina has won 34 of its last 36 games. 

 

FETZER FINALE BEFORE RENOVATION

♦  Saturday will mark the final event in Fetzer Field, the longtime home of the Tar Heel lacrosse and soccer programs, before renovations begin at the venue on Monday May 21.  

♦  Fetzer was built in 1935, and the Carolina women's lacrosse team has played games at Fetzer since the inception of the program in 1996.   

♦ Carolina is 139-27 all-time at Fetzer Field, including 18-1 in NCAA Tournament games.

 

RECENTLY IN THE NCAA TOURNAMENT

♦ The Tar Heels are 21-6 in the NCAA Tournament since 2009 and 13-2 since 2013, winning two national championships.  

♦ In its last eight NCAA Tournament appearances, Carolina has:

♦ Advanced to the NCAA semifinals six times (2009, 2010, 2011, 2013, 2015, 2016)

♦ Reached the NCAA championship game four times (2009, 2013, 2015, 2016)

CAROLINA'S NCAA TOURNAMENT HISTORY

♦ UNC is 30-16 all-time in NCAA Tournament games and is making its 19th NCAA appearance.

♦ The Tar Heels have made nine semifinal appearances (1997, 1998, 2002, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2013, 2015, 2016), including six in the last eight years.   UNC has reached the NCAA title game four times, winning twice (2013, 2016).

♦ Carolina is 21-2 at home in NCAA Tournament games, losing only in 2000 to Loyola and in 2014 to Virginia.  UNC has won 20 of its last 21 home NCAA Tournament games.

♦ The Tar Heels are 9-8 in NCAA Tournament quarterfinal games and have won six of their last eight quarterfinals, beating Notre Dame in 2009, Virginia in 2010, Loyola in 2011, Virginia in 2013, Penn State in 2015 and Notre Dame in 2016 while losing at Syracuse in 2012 and at home to Virginia in 2014 during that stretch.  

♦ Carolina is 8-2 in quarterfinal games played in Chapel Hill.  The Tar Heels are 1-6 in NCAA quarterfinal appearances played on the road.

♦ UNC is 15-1 with 15 consecutive wins in the NCAA Tournament second round.

♦ The Tar Heels are 2-2 in NCAA championship games, beating Maryland in 2013 and 2016 while losing to Northwestern in 2009 and Maryland in 2015.

♦ Head coach Jenny Levy has led Carolina to 19 NCAA Tournament berths, including 13 in a row. Levy's 29 NCAA Tournament wins rank fourth in the history of the sport.

♦ Carolina is making its 19th NCAA appearance in 22 years as a varsity program (since 1996).

♦ UNC is a top-five seed in the NCAA Tournament for the ninth year in a row.  

 

SERIES HISTORY VS. NAVY

♦ North Carolina leads the all-time series with Navy, 2-0. 

♦ Both Tar Heel wins in the series came in the NCAA Tournament in Chapel Hill. Carolina began its 2010 and 2012 NCAA Tournaments with home wins over the Midshipmen.

♦ Former Tar Heel Aly Messinger (2013-16)  is in her first season as an assistant coach and offensive coordinator at Navy after leading Carolina to NCAA titles in 2013 and 2016, including winning Most Outstanding Player honors last year. Messinger finished third all-time in program history with 230 points (149g, 81a). She was a three-time All-America selection and a two-time All-ACC honoree.

♦ UNC assistant coach Josh Dionne was an assistant coach at Navy last year.

♦ Matt Holman, a former UNC men's lacrosse player and the brother of Tar Heel senior Sydney Holman, is a volunteer assistant with Navy.

♦ In Jenny Levy and Cindy Timchal, two of the three winningest coaches in NCAA history will be on the sidelines on Saturday.  Timchal is the NCAA career leader with 490 wins, and Levy is third with 312.

 

FOUR IWLCA ALL-AMERICAS

♦ Four Carolina players earned All-America honors for the 2017 from the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association. 

♦ Senior attacker Molly Hendrick and junior midfielder Marie McCool made the first team, while junior attacker Ela Hazar and senior attacker Sammy Jo Tracy are on the third team.

 

FIVE INSIDE LACROSSE ALL-AMERICAS

♦ Four Tar Heels earned spots on the 2017 Inside Lacrosse Media All-America team.

♦ Senior attackers Molly Hendrick and Sammy Jo Tracy made the first team, along with junior midfielder Marie McCool. Senior defender made the third team. 

♦ Tar Heels Ela Hazar and Caylee Waters were honorable mention All-Americas. 

 

HAZAR BREAKS UNC SINGLE-SEASON ASSIST RECORD

♦ Junior Ela Hazar has broken the Carolina single-season record with 37 assists in 2017. Becky Lynch had the previous record with 36 in 2011. 

♦ Hazar is fifth in school history with 71 career assists.

 

HENDRICK BREAKS SCHOOL RECORD FOR GOALS IN A SEASON

♦ Senior Molly Hendrick has scored 69 goals this season, a single-season Carolina record.  Abbey Friend set previous record of 65 in 2014.

♦ Hendrick ranks third in school history with 183 career goals (the record is 198 by Abbey Friend) and sixth with 216 career points (the record is 256 by Corey Donohoe).

 

HENDRICK NEARING POINTS RECORD

♦ Senior attacker Molly Hendrick is nearing the single-season UNC record for points.  Hendrick enters the Navy game with 79 points on 69 goals and 10 assists.

♦ Kara Cannizzaro set the record with 83 points in 2013, and Abbey Friend is second in school history with 81 points in 2014.

 

RECORD-BREAKING OFFENSE IN 2017

♦ Carolina has scored a school-record 304 goals this season, breaking the single-season UNC record of 299 set in 2016.

♦ Carolina has a UNC-record 444 points this season, breaking the previous record of 442 set in 2016. Carolina has 414 points entering the NCAA Tournament.

♦ The Tar Heels have 140 assists as a team, within range of the single-season record of 143 (set in 2016).

 

TAR HEEL TIDBITS FROM THE ACC & NCAA STATS

♦ UNC is second in the nation as a team in draw controls (17.47 per game), eighth in points per game (23.37), eighth in scoring margin (6.21) fourth in scoring offense (16.00) and first in shots per game (38.11).

♦ Molly Hendrick is sixth nationally with 69 goals.  She also leads the ACC and is seventh nationally with 3.63 goals per game.  Hendrick leads the ACC in shots per game (No. 2 in the nation) and shots on goal per game (No. 1 in the nation).

♦ Ela Hazar leads the ACC in assists (37) and assists per game (1.95).
