ORLANDO, FLA. - University of North Carolina rising senior Craig Emslie set a new Tar Heel record in the 100-meter breaststroke Sunday at the YCF Summer Solstice Invitational in Orlando, Fla.
Emslie came into the day with a seeded time of 1:03.30. In the preliminaries of the event, he swam a 1:02.16 to break the previous UNC long course record of 1:02.78 set by Alex Gianino as a post graduate student. Gianino, a 2014 UNC alumnus, set the record at the North Carolina Senior Long Course Championships in 2015.
Emslie, a native of Cape Town, South Africa, went on to break his own record in the finals on Sunday night, going 1:02.02.
Emslie also clocked personal best time in the 50-meter breaststroke at 27.9 and in the 200-meter breaststroke at 2:15.9 during the weekend.
This is the second UNC long course record to fall this summer. Caroline Baldwin broke the school mark in the women's 100-meter backstroke earlier this month at the Santa Clara Grand Prix meet.
