UNC Set For Sweet 16 Matchup With California
Release: 05/18/2017
For the fourth year in a row, the North Carolina men's tennis team is set to play in an NCAA Sweet 16 match, facing California Thursday at 7 p.m. in Athens, Ga. A victory would give the Tar Heels their fourth consecutive trip to the Elite 8.

UNC is seeded ninth in the NCAA Tournament field, and the Golden Bears are eighth. The teams met earlier this season, on Feb. 18 in the quarterfinals of the ITA National Team Indoor Championship, with the Tar Heels winning 4-2.

Carolina advanced to Athens with a pair of homecourt victories last weekend at Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center, beating VCU 4-0 in the first round on May 12 and No. 20 South Carolina 4-1 in the second on May 13.

UNC is making its 22nd NCAA Tournament appearance in 24 seasons under coach Sam Paul. The Tar Heels hosted first and second round NCAA action in Chapel Hill for the fourth year in a row, the fifth time in the past six years and the ninth time overall.

Heading into the third round, UNC is 29-25 all-time in NCAA Tournament play. The Tar Heels are 11-3 over the past four seasons, including the two wins this year.
