Athens, Ga. – The University of North Carolina women's golf team shot a 9-over par 297 on Tuesday in the second round of the NCAA Athens Regional. After two days, the team's stands at 23-over par and is in tenth place.
“Play by the team was definitely stronger overall,” said head coach Jan Mann. “Unfortunately, we did not climb up the leaderboard. As evidenced by a couple of teams' scores today, you can go low and that is our intention tomorrow. As long as we stay confident, relaxed and having fun, this team still has a shot at advancing to the NCAA Championships.”
Senior Leslie Cloots had the best round for the second straight day as she carded a 1-over par 73. Cloots is currently tied for 11th place overall and is in contention to qualify for the NCAA Championships individually.
Alabama, the number one seed, leads at 3-under par. They're followed by Baylor at 2-over par, Michigan State at 5-over par, Clemson at 10-over par, and Northwestern and Tennessee tied at 12-over par. The top six teams advance to the NCAA Championships.
Individually, Wake Forest's Jennifer Kupcho leads at 6-under par. Lauren Stephenson of Alabama is one back of Kupcho. The top three individuals who are not part of the six qualifying teams will also advance to the NCAA Championships. Currently those positions are occupied by Kupcho, Laura Fuenfstueck of College of Charleston (-3), and Cloots (E).
Tomorrow the Tar Heels will tee off at 7:30 a.m. EDT on No. 10 alongside Princeton and Auburn. Live scoring will be available on Golfstat and in-round coverage will be shared on Twitter under the handle @UNCwomensgolf.
