Athens, Ga. – The University of North Carolina women's golf team shot 14-over par 302 on Monday and are tied for ninth place at the NCAA Athens Regional. The team was led by Senior Leslie Cloots who had the only eagle in the field today on the par-5 ninth hole. Cloots is 1-under par and tied for seventh after day one.
“Leslie and Bryana had very solid rounds on a tough golf course,” said head coach Jan Mann. “The others were close to having good rounds today. They struck the ball well however we just didn't see some putts fall for them. We know we are still in position to make a run at the NCAAs but it will take a full team effort with two solid rounds. Certainly if we eliminate some of the big mistakes we will only put ourselves in a better position tomorrow. Leah and I have complete faith in this team and believe they will finish strong the next two days.”
Michigan State leads the team field at 4-under par, they are followed by Alabama at 1-over par, Georgia and Northwestern at 5-over par, Baylor at 8-over par, and Tennessee at 9-over par. The top six teams after Wednesday's third round will advance to the NCAA Championships.
Jennifer Kupcho of Wake Forest leads the individual competition at 4-under par. A group one shot back of Kupcho includes Clemson's Alice Hewson, Michigan State's Sarah Burnham, and Alabama's Lauren Stephenson.
Tomorrow the Tar Heels will tee off at 7:30 a.m. EDT on No. 10 alongside Clemson and Central Florida. Live scoring will be available on Golfstat and in-round coverage will be shared on Twitter @UNCwomensgolf.
