The victory allows UNC head coach Brian Kalbas to become the program’s all-time wins leader with 352, passing Kitty Harrison who led the team from 1977-98. His career record of 352-90 is good for a .7963 winning percentage, moving ahead of Duke coach Jamie Ashworth (463-119, .7955) for the all-time lead in the ACC.
“When I was a coach at William & Mary I had so much respect and fondness for Kitty (Harrison). Whenever we played her she was always so classy. To follow her and pass her is amazing because of just how amazing she is as a person,” said Kalbas.
After dropping the doubles point for only the fourth time all season, UNC sophomores Chloe Ouellet-Pizer and #31 Jessie Aney disposed of their opponents in straight sets to give Carolina its first lead of the match, 2-1. Ouellet-Pizer defeated senior Alyssa Smith, while Aney took down No. 56 Chalena Scholl.
Carolina freshman #94 Makenna Jones increased the lead to 3-1 with a 6-3, 6-1 victory on court five over sophomore Ellyse Hamlin.
The clinching match would come from senior and No. 2 ranked Hayley Carter, who tied the ACC record with 161 career singles victories. Carter won 7-5, 6-3, over #85 Samantha Harris to improve her Tar Heel record to a staggering 161-24.
No. 8 Sara Daavettila added to the Carolina win total with a 7-5, 6-1 win over fellow freshman #36 Meible Chi.
Carolina trailed 2-1 on all three doubles courts, and ultimately lost court two by a 6-2 margin. However, Carter and Daavettila won 6-3 on court one, meaning the opening point would come down to court three. Aney sent the match to a tiebreaker, but the Blue Devils prevailed 7-3 to garner a 1-0 advantage over the Tar Heels.
Carolina (25-2, 11-1) hosts Pitt on Saturday at 11 a.m. and Syracuse on Sunday at 1 p.m. Duke (17-4, 11-1) plays unbeaten Georgia Tech on Sunday. A victory by the Blue Devils could possibly setup a three-way tie for first place in the ACC standings.
