CHAPEL HILL --- No. 6 Virginia Tech won eight of 10 bouts to take a 28-8 dual match victory over North Carolina Sunday night at Carmichael Arena. Joey Ward and Devin Kane won for the Tar Heels, who fell to 4-3, while the Hokies improved to 7-1 in the ACC opener for both programs.
Ward, the No. 5-ranked 141 pounder in the country, pushed his record to 18-2 with his sixth bonus point win of the year. The Cincinnati, Ohio, redshirt senior scored a takedown in the opening 10 seconds against Brendan Ryan and never let up. With a near fall in the final moments of the second period, Ward locked up the 16-0 victory.
Making his Carmichael debut, true freshman Kane impressed in an 8-4 win over David Bergida at 165 pounds. Kane was on top for much of the bout and just missed some additional back points that may have pushed him to a major decision.
No. 2 Joey Dance (125), No. 4 Zack Zavatsky (184) and No. 3 Ty Walz (285) had bonus point wins for the Hokies. In addition to those victories, No. 2 Zach Epperly beat No. 7 Ethan Ramos in a feature match at 174, 8-2.
Carolina returns to the mat Saturday at 7 p.m. against Iowa State.
