University of North Carolina junior Jose Montaño leads the Elon Phoenix Invitational by one shot after two rounds on Monday. Montaño, playing in the event as an individual, shot 67 in the first round and 65 in the second for a total of 132.
He leads Logan Lowe of George Washington by a stroke. UNC sophomore Tailin Song is tied for 16th with a 68-71–139.
The event is being played at the Alamance Country Club.
Montaño won three collegiate tournaments at Xavier. He transferred to UNC this year.
He had three birdies, three bogeys and two eagles in the first round and six birdies and no bogeys in the second. The 65 is the lowest round by a Tar Heel this season. He is the first Tar Heel to have two eagles in a round this year.
The final round of the Elon Phoenix Invitational will be played Tuesday.
