GREENSBORO, N.C. - UNC senior Loren Shealy has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Field Hockey Player of the Week after leading the Tar Heels to two victories over ranked teams in the ACC-Big Ten Challenge over the weekend.
Shealy scored a goal and registered an assist in each game as the Tar Heels opened the season 2-0. In a 5-1 win over No. 17 Michigan on Saturday, she scored off a rebound in the 22nd minute of play to put the Tar Heels up 3-0, then assisted on a penalty corner to make the score 4-0.
On Sunday, Shealy scored the game winner just 21 seconds into the match. "I can't say enough about that goal," UNC coach Karen Shelton said. "I can't remember us ever scoring that quickly at the start of a game."
Three minutes later, Shealy assisted on a penalty corner goal that put the Tar Heels up 2-0 in the fourth minute of play. After that early lead, UNC went on to beat No. 20 Iowa 4-1.
Shealy, a business administration major from Charlotte, N.C., is one of eight Tar Heels to register a goal or an assist in a balanced weekend effort.
Next up for second-ranked UNC is a trip to face No. 1 Maryland on Friday at 4 p.m. in College Park, Md. For the first time, the two will meet as members of different conferences, since the Terrapins are in their first Big Ten season. After the UNC-UM matchup, the Tar Heels will stay on the road on to play Delaware Sunday at noon. UNC's next home game is Sept. 12, when it hosts Syracuse at 5 p.m. for the ACC opener.
