CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - After a strong showing in the Illini Classic, the Tar Heels remain ranked No. 20 in the first regular season AVCA Division I Coaches Poll.
Carolina is tied with Hawaii for the No. 20 spot, as both teams received 341 points in the voting.
UNC traveled to Champaign, Illinois and finished 2-1 on the weekend, sweeping their first two matches against Southern Illinois and Long Beach State, before falling to then-No. 11 Illinois. Chaniel Nelson and Leigh Andrew were named to the All-Tournament team for Carolina.
The Atlantic Coast Conference has four representatives in the AVCA Top 25, with Florida State coming in at No. 8, Duke at No. 19, UNC at No. 20, and Louisville entering the poll at No. 24.
After Illinois swept its home tournament this past weekend, the former Tar Heel opponent moved up to No. 9 in the polls.
Carolina continues its preconference schedule with visits to No. 14 Michigan State and Michigan, who is receiving votes, next weekend in the ACC-Big Ten Challenge. UNC has its home opener on Friday, Sept. 12, at 6:30 p.m. against No. 16 Kentucky.
