CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Tar Heel golfer Leslie Cloots was the runner-up at the 2014 British Ladies Amateur Championship played at The Royal St. George's Golf Club in Kent, England. Cloots, from Antwerp, Belgium, advanced to the 18-hole championship final where she was defeated by Emily Pedersen, from Denmark, 3 and 1.
Cloots opened the match by winning the first hole, but Pedersen got it back to all square on the sixth hole. Pedersen took a 1-up lead on the 10th hole and never relinquished the lead. In the semifinals, Pedersen beat Sweden's Jenny Haglund while Cloots defeated France's Marion Vevssevre.
Cloots, a rising sophomore for the Tar Heels, played in nine tournaments this year, including one as an individual. Her top finish came at the SMU/Dallas Athletic Club where she tied for 28th place. Cloots carded a 76.65 stroke average and scored her low round of 72 three times.The prestigious event opened with two rounds of stroke play qualifying. The top 64 players advance to match play, with an 18-hole championship final.
