PINEHURST, N.C. - Former Tar Heel golfer Catherine O'Donnell is set to tee off at the 69th U.S. Women's Open to be played June 19-22 at Pinehurst Resort and Country Club's Course No. 2, a par-70, 6,649-yard layout. O'Donnell will begin the first round off the #10 tee at 7:07 Thursday morning. She is paired with former Colorado golfer Jessica Wallace and Lucy Li, who at age 11 is the youngest qualifier in U.S. Women's Open history.
O'Donnell, who played for the Tar Heels 2009-12, qualified for this year's U.S. Women's Open by finishing atop the leaderboard at the sectional qualifier at Rumson Country Club in Rumson, N.J. In the qualifier, O'Donnell fired a 2-over-par 144 with rounds of 2-under 69 and 4-over 75.
At the conclusion of the qualifier, O'Donnell said, "I'm excited about the U.S. Open. I've played Pinehurst No. 2 probably 30 times - I know it well and can't wait to play it again."O'Donnell, from Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., was a four-time All-ACC performer and an All-America performer at Carolina. She won three collegiate tournaments and won a 2013 SunCoast Ladies Tour event. This is her second year playing on the Symetra Tour.
