Tar Heels In Action At Women's National Championship

Several Tar Heels will be in action today through Saturday at the USA Field Hockey Women's National Championship, held at the Spooky Nook Sports complex in Lancaster, Pa. Eight teams drafted players from around the country and will play for the 2014 title.

Play begins today, with each team in action Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. After a day off on Thursday, the teams are in action again on Friday with the final games, including the championship, on Saturday.  The Women's National Championship serves as the selection trials for the U.S. Women's National Squad.

Tar Heels participating and teams for which they'll play are:

Kristy Bernatchez:  USA Red

Emma Bozek: U21

Casey Di Nardo: USA White

Abby Frey: Eagles

Shannon Johnson: USA Blue

Lauren Moyer: USA Red

Julia Young: Freedom

Also competing is UNC alum Caitlin Van Sickle, who is now part of the U.S. National Team training program and will play for the Freedom.  UNC Associate Head Coach Grant Fulton will serve as an assistant coach for USA Red.

At the same time as the Women's National Championship, the Under 21 Championship also will take place at the Nook. Named to that list are two incoming freshmen, Gab Major and Charlotte Vaziri.
