CHAPEL HILL - The Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association has named 2014 Tar Heel senior Zoe Skinner as one of three winners of the 2014 IWLCA Community Awareness Award.
Megan Smith of Limestone College and Amanda Ingersoll of Stevens Institute of Technology also won the award. All three will be honored at the IWLCA's All American Banquet on June 7 in Valley Forge Pa.
The University of North Carolina has rarely seen a student-athlete make the community impact of Zoe Skinner. After winning the Yeardley Love Unsung Hero Award in 2013, she took her leadership and community service to another level in the last year. Last summer, she studied the role of post-conflict resolution in the Balkans at the Burch Honors Research Seminar in Croatia, Bosnia Herzegovina, Kosovo and Vienna. Skinner met with senior officials from international organizations like USAID, the United Nations, NATO and more in the name of world peace.
A two-time winner of the Atlantic Coast Conference's Top Six For Service Award, Skinner also created a pen pal program between local elementary school kids and Tar Heel student athletes, including weekly visits and mentoring. She led the lacrosse team and other UNC squads' interactions with the UNC Children's Hospital, Murdoch Development Center, Share Your Christmas Foundation, Ronald McDonald House and Charles House.
