Release: 05/21/2014
ATHENS, Georgia - North Carolina women's tennis freshmen Jamie Loeb and Hayley Carter earned national awards from the Intercollegiate Tennis Association on Tuesday.

Carter, the 2014 ITA Player to Watch, is the No. 5 ranked singles player, and is ranked No. 3 with doubles partner Loeb. She has won 47 singles matches and more than 30 in doubles.

The 2014 ACC Freshman of the Year, Carter advanced to the Round of 16 of the main draw at the 2013 Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships, winning seven matches along the way as she advanced through both prequalifying and qualifying draws. Carter also reached the main draw singles final at the 2013 USTA/ITA Carolina Regional Championships and reached the semifinals of the 2013 USTA/ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships.

Loeb, the 2014 ITA Rookie Player of the Year, has had a fantastic start to her college tennis career. The Tar Heel won two major tournaments in the fall of 2013: the 2013 USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships and Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships. She became the first freshman to win at Riviera since 2004, winning 11 consecutive matches to advance from prequalifying and claim the title.

She went 19-1 last fall and this spring surged to the No. 1 spot in the ITA Division I National Singles Rankings, the first female player from North Carolina to do so. Loeb is 50-3 in singles and is the top seed at the 2014 NCAA Singles Championships that begins on Wednesday.
