STILLWATER, OKLA. - The women's golf team at the University of North Carolina stands in a tie for 11th place approaching the final day of play in the NCAA Central Regional. North Carolina carded a 16-over 304, contributing to the 27-over 603 overall score. Katherine Perry headed the pack of Tar Heels with a 1-over 73 day two score.
"It was nice to see Jackie come back with a good round today. Katherine and Elizabeth continue to play very steady," said Head Coach Jan Mann. "Tomorrow will be a real test of keeping nerves under control and trusting in their abilities."
Perry, a senior Native of Cary, N.C., heads into the final round of play with an even-par 144 total score. Parry fired four birdies and five bogeys for a 1-over 73 in the second round, in addition to her 1-under 71 first round score, puts her in a tie for seventh place. Sophomore Elizabeth Mallett registered a 2-over 74 on day two with four birdies, four bogeys, and one double bogey. Mallett, of Sutton Coldfield, England, records a two-day score of a 7-over 151 after a 5-over 77 on day one, and she is currently tied for 42nd place. Leslie Cloots, a freshman from Antwerp, Belgium, carded a 4-over 76 in the first round and an 8-over 80 in the second round with three birdies, seven bogeys, and two double bogeys. Cloots is tied for 77th place with a 12-over 156. Two Tar Heels are in a tie for 86th place with a 14-over 158, senior Jackie Chang and junior Maia Schechter. Chang registered an eagle and four bogeys for a 2-over 74. Chang, a native of Scottsdale, Ariz., adds to her round one score of a 12-over 84. Schechter shot an 8-over 80 in the second round, which added to her 6-over 78 first round score. Schechter, from Takoma Park, Md., had one birdie, seven bogeys, and one double bogey.
No. 3 UCLA jumped into first place with a 12-over 588, with California tailing in second place with a 13-over 589. Florida and Alabama are locked in third place with a 16-over 592. Ohio State, Kent State, and Arizona are in fifth with a 17-over 593, sixth with an 18-over 594, and seventh with a 19-over 595, respectively. Mississippi State and Oklahoma State are tied for eighth place with a 20-over 596.
Kent State's Wad Phaewchiplee continues to lead the field of golfers with a 6-under 138, and UNLV's Dana Finkelstein stands in second with a 2-under 142. In a four-way tie for third each with a 1-under 143 are Alabama's Stephanie Meadow and Emma Talley, Oklahoma State's Jayde Panos, and Florida's Sarah Schober. At an even-par 144 and tied for seventh place are Mallett of North Carolina, Yupaporn Kawinpakorn of Kansas, and Manon Gidali or Arizona.
The NCAA Central Regional concludes Saturday at the Karsten Creek Golf Club, which features a par 72, 6,200-yard layout. The tournament play resumes at 7:30 a.m. tomorrow. Live scoring will be available on GoHeels.com and on Golfstat.com.
