CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - North Carolina (10-4) will travel to Big East Conference champion Denver (14-2) Saturday to play in the first round of the NCAA Men's Lacrosse Championship. The game will be played at 7:30 p.m. EDT (5:30 p.m. local time in Denver) on Saturday at Barton Stadium on the Denver campus.
North Carolina heads to the NCAA Tournament for the 29th time in school history and for the eighth year in a row. The Tar Heels have made the tournament in each of Coach Breschi's six years as head coach.
The Tar Heels will face the hottest team in the country in the NCAA Tournament first round. The Pioneers have won 11 straight games and have not lost since losing at Penn 12-10 on March 1. Carolina's four losses this year have come by a combined total of five goals.
UNC is unseeded in the tournament for only the third time in history and the first time since 1998. Carolina's match at Denver on Saturday will be its first true road game in the NCAA Tournament since it lost 17-11 at eighth-seeded Loyola in the first round of the 1995 tournament.
The Pioneers have eliminated the Tar Heels in each of the past two NCAA Tournaments. Denver won in the first round at Fetzer Field in 2012 by a 16-14 score. Last year, the Pioneers beat Carolina 12-11 in the NCAA Tournament quarterfinals at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Ind.
Saturday's game will be nationally televised on ESPNU.
