Virginia Tech's Devin Carter was named the 2014 ACC Wrestling Scholar-Athlete of the Year. The 141-pounder was named the Most Valuable Wrestler at this ACC Wrestling Championship and led Virginia Tech to the team title.
A total of six members of this year's All-ACC Academic Wrestling have been named to the team multiple times, led by Virginia senior Jon Fausey, who is a four-time All-ACC Academic honoree. Joining Carter as three-time team members are Abbondanza and Utley of North Carolina and Virginia Tech's Chris Moon. Maryland's Danny Orem was chosen for the second time.
Four members of the All-ACC Academic team also earned All-Americas honors and were ACC champions in Carter, Maryland's Jimmy Sheptock (184), Virginia's Nick Sulzer (165) and Pitt's Tyler Wilps (174).
Five members of the All-ACC Academic wrestling squad were also named All-ACC in Carter, Sheptock, Sulzer, Wilps and Pitt's Max Thomusseit (184).
North Carolina and Duke led all schools with five student-athletes each on the 2014 All-ACC Wrestling Academic Team. Pitt and Maryland each had three honorees, while NC State, Virginia and Virginia Tech had two apiece.
The ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards were established in September 2007 to be awarded annually to the top junior or senior student-athlete in their respective sports. Candidates for the awards must have maintained a 3.0 grade point average for their career as well as a 3.0 for each of the last two semesters.
To be eligible for All-ACC Academic Team consideration, a student-athlete must have earned a minimum 3.00 grade point average for the previous semester and maintained a minimum 3.00 cumulative average during his academic career.
