CORAL GABLES, Fla. - The ninth-ranked North Carolina men's tennis team (20-3, 7-1 ACC) extended its winning streak to five matches on Sunday with a 5-2 triumph over No. 47 Miami (12-8, 2-5 ACC) at Neil Schiff Tennis Center.
The Tar Heels gained an early advantage behind improved doubles play before rallying in singles to claim the victory.
Carolina dropped four first sets in singles but rallied to take four of the six matches.
Diego Soto of Miami struck first, defeating Oystein Steiro on court three 6-3, 6-2, but Carolina quickly countered behind strong performances from senior Nelson Vick and freshman Johan Skattum on courts five and six, respectively. Skattum earned a 7-6(7-1), 6-4 win and Vick also won in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4.
In other singles matches, No. 58 Brett Clark added to an excellent weekend in his return home to the state of Florida, gutting out a three-setter on court two for his 30th singles victory when including fall competition.
Jack Murray also fought through three sets to clinch the match for the Tar Heels, 2-6, 6-4, 6-2 on court four.
In the final match of the day, freshman Ronnie Schneider battled valiantly but ultimately fell to No. 92 Omar Aly 6-4, 5-7, 7-6(9-7) on court one.
The Tar Heels will be back in action on Friday against No. 64 Georgia Tech at Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center. The match is set to start at 3 p.m.
