DALLAS, TEXAS - In the SMU/Dallas Athletic Club Invitational, the Tar Heels jumped into third place with a 21-over-par 597. North Carolina recorded a 2-over-par 290 in the second round with Elizabeth Mallett leading the team registering a 3-under 69 in first place.
"We were pleased with how the team played today," said Tar Heel Head Coach Jan Mann. "Conditions were still not great and tomorrow looks like it is going to be cold and wet. We are getting our share of experience with challenging conditions. Everyone stayed patient and in their process. It is a tight layout so you really have to trust yourself with each shot."
Mallett, a sophomore from Sutton Coldfield, England, is topping the player leaderboard with a 3-under 141 total. Mallett fired four birdies and one bogey for a 3-under 69 on day two and an even par on day one. Carding two birdies and three bogeys in the second round, Jackie Chang is in a tie for 16th with a 1-over 73. Combined with her 6-over 78, Chang, a senior from Scottsdale, Ariz., stands at 6-over 150. Two Tar Heels are in a tie for 28th place with a 10-over 154, freshman Leslie Cloots and sophomore Samantha Marks. Scoring an even par in the second round and a 10-over 82 in the first round, Cloots, from Antwerp, Belgium, shot three birdies and three bogeys. Similar to the first round, Marks, from Maitland, Fla., recorded another 5-over 77 with one birdie and six bogeys. Senior Katherine Perry is in a tie for 44th with a 12-over 156 total score. Perry, a native of Cary, N.C., registered two birdies, three bogeys, and one double bogey for a 4-over 76 on day two in addition to her day one 8-over 80 score.
Baylor and LSU continue to lead the pack of 15 teams in first and second place with a 15-over 591 and a 19-over 595, respectively. North Carolina moved into third place carding a 21-over 597. The standings for fourth, fifth, and six are each within one with UTSA in fourth recording a 28-over 604, Kansas in fifth shooting a 29-over 605, and Oklahoma State scoring a 30-over 606.
The only under-par competitor on the field of 87 golfers is North Carolina's Mallett with a 3-under 141. In a five-way tie for second with a 2-over-par 146 are UTSA's Fabiola Arriaga, Texas Tech's Elin Arvidsson, Baylor's Hayley Davis, Kansas State's Olivia Eliasson, and LSU's Carly Goldstein. There is another tie at 3-over 147 for seventh place between Houston's Raegan Bremer, Kansas's Yupaporn Kawinpakorn, and Baylor's Hadas Libman and Laura Lonardi.
"Elizabeth is playing with so much confidence. I look forward to her and the entire team having a great round tomorrow," stated Mann.
The final day of the SMU/Dallas Athletic Club Invitational is Sunday at the Dallas Athletic Club. The Dallas Athletic Club features a par 72, 6,264-yard layout. The tournament play begins at 8:30 a.m. with a shotgun start. Live scoring will be available on GoHeels.com and on Golfstat.com.
