UNC Tied For Fifth After First Round of SMU Invitational

DALLAS, TEXAS - The University of North Carolina's women's golf team excelled in play today and stands tied for fifth out of the field of 15 teams with a 19-over-par 307. With an even par, sophomore Elizabeth Mallett led the team in the first day of play in the SMU/Dallas Athletic Club Invitational. 

"Wind and cold weather seem to be following the team," commentted Tar Heel Head Coach Jan Mann on today's play. "Tomorrow should be similar temps and wind conditions. We need to focus on our process, trusting each shot, and playing relaxed and confident golf."

Mallet, a native of Sutton Coldfield, England, fired an even par with four birdies, two bogeys, and a double bogey, and is currently in a tie for second place heading into round two. Sophomore Samantha Marks, in 27th place, carded a 5-over 77. Marks, of Maitland, Fla., shot three birdies, six bogeys, and a double bogey. From Scottsdale, Ariz., senior Jackie Chang recorded a 6-over 78 with six bogeys. Chang is in 35th place approaching the second day of play. Katherine Perry is in 53rd with an 8-over 80. Perry, a senior from Cary, N.C., registered three birdies, seven bogeys, and two double bogeys. Freshman Leslie Cloots, from Antwerp, Belgium, shot a 10-over-par 82. Cloots is in 67th place after scoring one birdie, five bogeys, and three double bogeys.

Leading the field is Baylor firing a 6-over 294. LSU is in second carding a 13-over 301. Oklahoma State and Kansas trail in third and fourth with a 17-over 305 and an 18-over 306, respectively. At 19-over 307, there is a three-way tie between North Carolina, Texas Tech, and UTSA. SMU follows in eighth place with a 20-over-par.

At 1-under-par 71, Yupaporn Kawinpakorn of Kansas leads the field of 87 golfers. There is a five-way tie for second place between North Carolina's Mallet, Texas Tech's Elin Arvidsson, Houston's Raegan Bremer, Baylor's Hayley Davis, and Kansas State's Olivia Eliasson each with a score of an even par. LSU's Carly Goldshein and Baylor's Hadas Libman and Laura Lonardi are tied for seventh with a 1-over 73.

The SMU/Dallas Athletic Club Invitational continues through Sunday at the Dallas Athletic Club. The Dallas Athletic Club features a par 72, 6,264-yard layout. The tournament play begins at 8 a.m. Live scoring will be available on and on
