Women Golfers Tied 8th At Bryan Park

GREENSBORO, N.C. - The University of North Carolina women's golf team fired a 14-over-par 302 and is tied for eighth place following the first round of the Bryan National Collegiate.  Sophomore Elizabeth Mallett led the Tar Heels in the first round by firing a 1-over 73.

Mallett's 73 included three birdies, two bogeys and one double bogey.  The Sutton Coldfield, England, native is tied for 10th place in the individual race.  Senior Jackie Chang fired a 2-over 74 and is tied for 20th place.  Chang, from Scottsdale, Ariz., carded three birdies and five bogeys on Friday.  Maii Schechter, a junior from Takoma Park, Md., posted a three-over 75 and is tied for 25th after scoring two birdies and five bogeys.  Senior Katherine Perry, from Cary, N.C., and freshman Leslie Cloots, from Antwerp, Belgium, both shot an 8-over 80 and are tied for 77th.  Samantha Marks, a sophomore from Maitland, Fla., posted a 79 while competing as an individual and is tied for 69th place.

Third-ranked Duke leads field of 18 teams by firing a 4-over-par 292.  Michigan State is two strokes back in second place with a 6-over 294 total.  Florida State is third at 295, Louisville is fourth at 297 and three teams are tied for fifth place at 12-over 300 - Clemson, Florida and Penn State.  Four teams, including the Tar Heels, are tied for eighth place at 302 - Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia and Ohio State.

There is a three-way tie atop the individual scoreboard at 2-under-par 70 between Laetitia Beck of Duke, Kelly Grassel of Michigan State and Portland Rosen of Virginia.  Allyssa Ferrell of Michigan State and Sierra Sims of Wake Forest are one stroke back at 1-under 71 in a tie for fourth place.  Four players are tied for sixth place at even par 72 - Duke's Celine Boutier, South Carolina's Justine Dreher, Clemson's Ashlan Ramsey and Louisville's Laura Restrepo.  Carolina's Elizabeth Mallett is one of 10 players deadlocked in a tie for 10th place at 1-over 73. 

The 54-hole event continues through Sunday and is being played at the Bryan Park Champions Course, which features a par 72, 6,386-yard layout.  There will be an 8:30 shotgun start for each of the final two rounds. Live scoring is available on GoHeels.com.
