Tar Heels Heading To EAGL Championships
Release: 03/21/2014

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The North Carolina gymnastics team will head to Durham, N.H., on Saturday, March 22 for the East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) Championships. After 10 weeks of competition, the Tar Heels (9-10, 5-7 EAGL) enter the weekend ranked seventh in the EAGL, with a regional qualifying score of 194.345.

New Hampshire, NC State and Rutgers are atop the conference rankings. However, coming off a big first place win at William & Mary's quad meet last week, UNC plans to be a strong contender.

"We had a really focused team effort [last week], and I think we have some good momentum going into the EAGL Championships," said head coach Derek Galvin.

The Tar Heels have been lead all season by all-arounder Haley Watts. Senior co-captains Meredith Magjuka, Kristin Aloi and Michelle Ikoma, who just recently returned to the lineup, have all also helped lead the team, both on and off the floor.

Unfortunately, the Tar Heels learned earlier this week that they would be without the services of freshman Megan Marenghi who injured her knee.  Marenghi was coming off a strong performance in the season finale against William & Mary with a 9.875 on bars and a 9.775 on balance beam.

So far this season, the Tar Heels have gone 1-2 against second-ranked NC State, 1-0 against third place Rutgers, 2-1 against fourth place Maryland, 1-1 against number five Pitt, 0-1 against number six George Washington, and 1-1 against last place Towson. North Carolina has yet to face top-ranked New Hampshire.

UNC started off the year strong, winning three of its first four meets. However, with the loss of co-captain Ikoma and freshman standout Christina Pheil, both due to injury, the Heels struggled to find depth and consistency throughout much of the season. Recently, both athletes have returned to the lineup and the Heels look forward to heading into Saturday's competition at full-strength.
