Tar Heels Shut Out UNCG 6-0
Release: 03/20/2014

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Lori Spingola combined with Lauren Batten to help North Carolina shut out UNCG 6-0 on Thursday.

Spingola (9-6) pitched five innings for the victory, striking out three and giving up just three hits, and Batten pitched the final two innings, striking out one without surrendering a hit. Kendra Lynch had two RBIs for the Tar Heels, who improved to 14-11 for the year with the win.

"I thought we did a very nice job on the road today," head coach Donna J. Papa said. "Lori Spingola did a great job taking care of a lot of their hitters, and Lauren Batten came in and a did a good job finishing the game, which is what we need going deeper into the season. We didn't get as many hits as we've been getting, but we did hit the ball well and had a lot of quality at-bats. Our defense also played stellar today."

"We put together a really solid day. We took advantage of opportunities, made them count and came away with a win," Papa said.

Carolina got off to a hot start against the Spartans, scoring four runs in the first frame. Kati Causey drew a walk with bases loaded, forcing the first run across the plate for the Tar Heels, and Kendra Lynch followed with a double to left that scored two more runs. After Darby Rosen drew a walk, bases were loaded again for Erin Satterfield, who hit an infield single to plate another run.

With bases loaded again in the third, Lauren Walker came in to pinch hit. She struck out swinging but reached first on the wild pitch while Lynch came home to make it 5-0.

Carolina tacked on one final run in the fourth as Kelly reached on a Spartan error, then moved to second on a ground out before scoring on an RBI single by Elena Covert.
