HILTON HEAD, S.C. - The Tar Heels finished in seventh place at the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate with a 40-over 892. Elizabeth Mallett carded a 1-over 72 to lead the team in the 16-over 300 final round.
A sophomore from Sutton Coldfield, England, Mallett fired a 1-over 72 in the third round to finish in seventh place overall. Coupled with a 1-under 70 in the second round and an additional 1-over 72 in the first round, Mallett recorded a 1-over 214 overall. Katherine Perry, a senior from Cary, N.C., jumped into 21st place after a third day score of a 2-over 73. With a 3-over 74 in the first and second rounds, Perry shot an overall 8-over 221. Senior Jackie Chang and freshman Leslie Cloots both tied for 49th place with a 16-over 229. Chang, from Scottsdale, Ariz., scored a 3-over 74, 7-over 78, and concluded the tournament with a 6-over 77. Cloots, a native of Antwerp, Belgium, carded a 4-over 75, 5-over 76, and a 7-over 78 in the final round. Samantha Marks tied for 65th place with a 19-over 232 after registering a 9-over on day three. From Maitland, Fla., Marks finished with a 4-over 75 in round one and a 6-over 77 in round two.
Duke finished far ahead of the field of 17 teams with a 10-over 862 total. Vanderbilt came in second with a 20-over 872. Tied for third, Oklahoma and LSU recorded a 33-over 885. South Carolina and Wake Forest finished in fifth and sixth, respectively. The Gamecocks finished with a 34-over 886, and the Demon Deacons finished with a 35-over 887. In a tie for seventh, North Carolina and Arkansas each registered a 40-over 892.
After finishing in a tie for first with a 2-under 211, Duke's Yui Lu and LSU's Carolina Nistrup played for the first place position. Lu beat Nistrup with a birdie on the first playoff hole, leaving Lu in first and Nistrup in second. In a tie for third at 1-under 212 were four players: Duke's Celine Boutier, Vanderbilt's Simin Feng, Arizona State's Noemi Jimenez, and Alabama's Stephanie Meadow. Mallett took in seventh place with a 1-over 214.
The Darius Rucker Intercollegiate was a 54-hole event played at Long Cove Club, a par 71, 6,233-yard layout. North Carolina with return to action at the Bryan National Collegiate in Greensboro, N.C. on March 28-30. The tournament with be held on the Byran Park Golf Club's Champions Course, that features a par 72, 6,386-yard layout.
