Women Golfers Move to Fourth Place

HILTON HEAD, S.C. - The North Carolina women golfers carded a 13-over 297 in the second round of the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate to move into fourth place. Leading the team was sophomore Elizabeth Mallett with a 1-under 70 to help the Tar Heels secure a 24-over 592 two-round score.

"We played another solid round today," says Tar Heel head coach Jan Mann. "Elizabeth and Katherine continue to lead the team. We are looking forward to teeing it up tomorrow. I am confident we will have a good day."

From Sutton Coldfield, England, Mallett jumped up to fifth place after firing a 1-under 70. Senior Katherine Perry, from Cary, N.C., is tied for 23rd place after shooting a 3-over 74, repeating her first round score. Leslie Cloots, a native of Antwerp, Belgium, carded a 4-over 76 and is tied for 40th place. Samantha Marks and Jackie Chang are both tied for 46th place heading into the third day of competition. The sophomore from Maitland, Fla., Marks finished the round with a 5-over 77. Chang, from Scottsdale, Ariz., carded a 6-over 78 to conclude the lineup for North Carolina.

Third ranked Duke Blue Devils leads the pack of 17 teams with a 7-over 575 after recording an even-par 284 in the first round and a 7-over 291 in the second round. Vanderbilt and South Carolina are in second and third, respectively. The Commodores remained in second shooting a 6-over 290 round one, a 9-over 293 round two, and a 15-over 583 total. The Gamecocks moved into third place with a 12-over 296 going into the final round, after they shot a 10-over 294 in the first round and a total score of a 22-over 590. Following closely, the Tar Heels stand in fourth with a 24-over 592 total with an 11-over 295 day one and 13-over 297 day two. LSU rounds out the top five with a 25-over 593 combined score.

Alabama's Stephanie Meadow continues to lead the field of 90 golfers with a 1-over 72 today and a 3-under overall score. LSU's Caroline Nistrup and Duke's Celine Boutier recorded a 2-under 140 and tied for second place. Duke's Yu Liu is in fourth place with a 1-under 141 total. Tar Heel Elizabeth Mallett is in fifth place after carding an even-par 142 going into the final round.

The 54-hole event will conclude Sunday at the Long Cove Club. The course features a par 71, 6,233-yard layout.  The event begins at 8 a.m. with the first Tar Heel teeing off at 8:45 a.m. in the final round. Live scoring is available on GoHeels.com.
