HILTON HEAD, S.C. - The University of North Carolina women's golf team fired an 11-over-par 295 total and is in fifth place after the first round of the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate. The Tar Heels were led by sophomore Elizabeth Mallett who fired a 1-over 72 on Friday.
"We are extremely pleased with how the team played today," says Tar Heel head coach Jan Mann. "We stayed patient and composed in pretty adverse conditions. Our focus has been to give 100 percent effort in practice and work hard on the mental game. They both paid off today."
Mallett, from Sutton Coldfield, England, is tied for 10th place after scoring three birdies and four bogeys. Seniors Jackie Chang and Katherine Perry both carded a 3-over 74 and are tied for 22nd place. Chang, from Scottsdale, Ariz., carded two birdies and five bogeys while Perry, from Cary, N.C., scored one birdie, two bogeys and one double bogey. Sophomore Samantha Marks, from Maitland, Fla., and freshman Leslie Cloots, from Antwerp, Belgium, both shot a 4-over 75 and stand tied for 32nd place.
Duke, ranked third nationally, leads the field of 17 teams after firing an even par 284 in the first round. Vanderbilt and Alabama are nine strokes back in second place at 9-over 293. South Carolina is in fourth place at 10-over 294 and the Tar Heels are one shot back in fifth place at 11-over 295. Three teams are tied for sixth place at 13-over 297 - Stanford, Arkansas and LSU.
Stephanie Meadow of Alabama fired a 4-under-par 67 to grab the first-round individual lead. Three players are two strokes back in a tie for second place at 2-under 69 - Duke's Yu Liu and Celine Boutier and Arkansas' Gaby Lopez. Mariah Stackhouse of Stanford and Anne Tanguay of Oklahoma are tied for fifth place at 1-under 70. There is a three-way tied for seventh at even par 71 between South Carolina's Katelyn Dambaugh, LSU's Caroline Nistrup and Arizona State's Noemi Jimenez. Four players are tied for 10th place at 1-over 72 - Carolina's Mallett, Auburn's Alex Harrell, Duke's Esther Lee and South Carolina's Samantha Swinehart.
The 54-hole event continues through Sunday at the Long Cove Club which features a par 71, 6,233-yard layout. The Tar Heels begin teeing off at 8:45 a.m. in Saturday's second round. Live scoring is available on GoHeels.com.
