Hatchell Honored At Evening Of Champions
Release: 02/28/2014
RALEIGH, N.C. - North Carolina women's basketball coach Sylvia Hatchell was the winner of the 2014 Kay Yow Champion Award on Thursday at the Greater Raleigh Sports Council Evening of Champions.

Hatchell left the Tar Heel bench this year to be treated for leukemia. Now in complete molecular remission, she continues treatment at the UNC Lineberger Cancer Center.

Hatchell, a Naismith Hall of Fame inductee in her 28th season in Chapel Hill and her 39th overall as a head coach, has over 900 career wins, more wins than any other active women's coach. She is alone with Kay Yow and Debbie Ryan in reaching 600-win mark at an Atlantic Coast Conference school.

In 2001, Hatchell established the UNC's Lineberger Blueberry Patch on her mountain property in Black Mountain, to allow the public to pick berries on the honor system and make donations to support UNC's Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center.

The award honors "a leader in the business community who is a champion for their organization, a champion for the community, and most importantly a champion for others."
