Howard Receives ACC Female Performer Of The Week
Release: 02/25/2014

GREENSBORO, N.C., - North Carolina sophomore shot thrower Sarah Howard was recognized as the Atlantic Coast Conference Female Performer of the week as announced Tuesday by the conference. NC State distance runner Andrew Colley was given the men's honor.

The Tar Heels' Howard's throw of 55-8 ½ in the Dennis Craddock Invitational tied for seventh-best nationally and set a new personal best, crushing her previous mark  of 54-4 ½  that she set earlier this year. The Dublin, Ga., native already held second-best shot throw in school history and extended it further. Her distance of 55-8 ½ is the top ACC mark this season by more than a foot.

"This past weekend produced some strong performances from many members of our team and in light of this I am very humbled to have been recognized for this award," Howard said. "Getting this far has definitely been a collective effort and this acknowledges all the hard work that has been put in from everyone."

The Wolfpack's Colley, a senior from Williamsburg, Va.,  finished in first place in the men's 3,000-meter run at the Alex Wilson Invitational in South Bend, Ind., on Saturday, setting a new career-best in the event with a time of 7:58.87. The three-time All-ACC and two-time All-America track performer finished nearly 22 seconds ahead of second place, while moving to No. 24 nationally in the event. Colley has finished in first-place in both indoor events he has competed in this year, the one-mile run at the Hokie Invitational (4:12.25) and last Saturday's effort at the Alex Wilson.

League teams are gearing up for this weekend's ACC Indoor Championship, which will be held this Thursday (Feb. 27) through Saturday (March 1) at Clemson University. ESPN3 will provide live coverage, beginning at 4 p.m. on Friday through conclusion of that evening's session, and on Saturday from noon until the conclusion of the Championship and the awards ceremony.
