Women's sabre led the way Sunday as the North Carolina fencing team competed at the U.S. Collegiate Squad Championships, hosted by the University of Pennsylvania at Coach Dave Micahnik Fencing Center. The Tar Heels claimed silver in that weapon, with Gillian Litynski, Sarah Hanvy, Caitlin Malone and Maura Thornton representing the Tar Heels.
Twelve teams participated in the event, some fencing in just a few weapons. UNC competed in all three for women and all three for men.
UNC was fourth in women's foil, behind Princeton, Penn and Brandeis. Representing the Tar Heels were Gabrielle D'Astoli, Amethyst Evans, Amanda Lalezarian and Wynton Wong. Carolina was seventh in women's epee, with Kacie Albert, Sarah Flinn, Kelley Hamill and Nancy Smith competing.
Men's foil and men's epee both were sixth, with Alex Burte, Deven Desai, Ian Kanar and Evan Philpot competing in foil and Daniel Giles, Michael Gopman Slonim, Maxwell Tice-Lewis and Parker Williams in epee.
Next up for the Tar Heels are the NCAA Mid-Atlantic/South Regional Championships, hosted by Lafayette College in Easton, Pa., on March 8.
