PALOS VERDES, CALIF. - The University of North Carolina women's golf team fired an 11-over-par 295 in the final round to finish with an 899 total and moved up to 10th place at the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge, the first event of the spring campaign. Leslie Cloots and Jackie Chang both fired a 1-over 72 on Tuesday.
Senior Katherine Perry led the Tar Heels in the three-day event as she fired a 3-over 74 in the final round to tie for 29th place with a 10-over 223 total. The Cary, N.C. native carded three birdies, two bogeys and two doubles. Elizabeth Mallett, a sophomore from Sutton Coldfield, England, finished three strokes behind Perry at 13-over 226 to tie for 39th place after posting a 77 on Tuesday. Freshman Cloots, from Wilrijk, Antwerp, Belgium, tied for 45th at 14-over 227. Her 1-over 72 in the final round came after three birdies and four bogeys while Chang's 72 came after two birdies and three bogeys. The senior from Scottsdale, Ariz., carded a 231 total to tie for 65th place. Sophomore Samantha Marks, from Maitland, Fla., struggled with an 87 on in the final round to tie for 81st with a 239 total.
Top-ranked Southern California captured the team championship with a 14-over 868 total. The Trojans fired a 15-over 299 in the final round to finish atop the 16-team field. Third-ranked Duke finished seven strokes back in second place at 21-over 873 after firing a 5-over 289 on Tuesday. Arizona State finished third at 23-over 875 while Washington and UCLA tied for fourth place with 881 totals. Arizona finished in sixth place at 882 while Baylor finished seventh at 883, Oklahoma eighth at 893, Wake Forest ninth at 894 and the Tar Heels 10th at 899.
Annie Park of Southern California won the individual title with an 8-under-par 207 total after firing a 2-over 73 in the final round. Hayley Davis of Baylor finished a distant second at 1-over 214. She also carded a 73 on Tuesday. There was a five-way tie for third place at 2-over 215 - Arizona State's Noemi Jimenez, Oklahoma's Alexandra Kaui, UCLA's Bronte Law, Duke's Yu Liu and Florida's Sarah Schober.
The 54-hole event, hosted by Ohio State, was played at Palos Verdes Golf Club which features a par 71, 6,017-yard layout. The Tar Heels return to action March 7-9 at the Darius Rucker Invitational in Hilton Head, S.C.
