CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Coach Sam Paul's North Carolina men's tennis team will compete this coming weekend in the annual Intercollegiate Tennis Association Kickoff Weekend event. This year, the 42nd-ranked Tar Heels will compete in a regional at Duke University with the weekend's winner advancing to next month's ITA Indoor National Team Championships at College Station, Texas.
On Saturday, #17 Duke (1-2) will play host to #54 Oregon (3-0) at 10 a.m. in the first semifinal match of the regional at Duke's Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center. The second semifinal match on Saturday will feature #42 North Carolina (4-0) against #50 San Diego State (2-0) at 1:30 p.m.
There will be two matches on Sunday. The consolation match will be played at 12:30 p.m. and the championship match at 4 p.m.
A victory by Carolina in this weekend's ITA Kickoff Event would send the Tar Heels to the ITA Team Indoor Nationals for the first time since 2008 when they were held in Seattle, Wash.
Carolina has started the season in oustanding fashion, winning four matches in a row and dropping only two points in the process. Several Tar Heels have started the season winning all of their singles matches to date including reigning ACC Player of the Week Brayden Schnur, fellow freshman Ronnie Schneider, sophomore Brett Clark, freshman Jack Murray and sophomore Stuart DePaolo.
The Tar Heels have wins over East Carolina 7-0, Wofford 7-0, #31 VCU 5-2 and Howard 7-0.
The ITA Kickoff Weekend Tournament Page will include links to live stats and live video for this weekend's matches.
