Tar Heel Rundown: January 1
Release: 01/01/2014

The Tar Heels thumped UNC Wilmington on #HappyBlueYear. The highlights:

People seemed to have a good time with the #HappyBlueYear theme, as the Storify attests...Lots of players had good games, but Roy Williams singled out Wade Moody for making the play of the game. But then Adam Lucas uncovered Moody's secret after the game and, well, you just have to read it...

Tar Heels in the NBA

Tyler Zeller had seven points and five rebounds for the Cavs...Harrison Barnes had seven rebounds in a Golden State win over Orlando...Danny Green scored three points in an easy San Antonio victory...Tyler Hansbrough had four points and a rebound in Toronto's win over Charlotte...Funny how opportunities find people. The suddenly depth-shy Lakers needed 28 minutes from Kendall Marshall last night, and he responded with 10 points and seven assists.

Hakeem Nicks had a confusing year for the Giants, and now has to figure out what happens next (he's a free agent)...Great headline from a Bengals blog on Giovani Bernard: "Our little football ninja"...

Olympic sports

Two Tar Heel wrestlers are seeded in their respective weight classes going into today's Southern Scuffle...Andrew Miller expects to be healthy at the start of the season for the Red Sox.

Today's games

Wrestling is at the Southern Scuffle in Chattanooga.

Today in Tar Heel history

January 1, 1947: Carolina played in the program's first bowl game, a 20-10 Sugar Bowl loss to Georgia. Unfortunately, video replay was not available for a game-turning lateral/forward lateral call that essentially handed the Bulldogs a touchdown and changed the momentum of the game. Georgia limited Tar Heel star Charlie Justice to just 37 yards on 18 carries.
